We’re working to protect something worth protecting.
DarkSky Grand Junction is a 501c3 nonprofit dedicated to reducing light pollution across the Grand Valley, including Grand Junction, Fruita, Mesa County, and beyond. We were founded with a straightforward idea: our night sky is a remarkable natural resource, and with the right policies and community will, we can protect it.
Why the Grand Junction Area?
Grand Junction, Fruita, and the Grand Valley sit at a remarkable intersection. We’re surrounded by public lands, national monuments, and state parks that rank among the darkest and most spectacular places in the American West. We have a community that values the outdoors and the natural environment. And we have outdoor lighting codes that, while strong, need to be updated and packaged with the resources needed to match the growing momentum around dark sky policy across Colorado.
We think the Grand Valley is ready for this conversation. We’re here to help lead it.

Our mission
We educate the public about the causes and effects of light pollution. We advocate for responsible outdoor lighting policy at the local and regional level. We build relationships with city and county officials, businesses, conservation organizations, and state and national dark sky partners to advance meaningful, lasting change. And we work toward International Dark Sky certifications across the Grand Junction area — a designation that recognizes communities and sites committed to protecting the natural night environment.
