We’re working to protect something worth protecting.

DarkSky GJ is a local nonprofit dedicated to reducing light pollution in Grand Junction and the surrounding region. We were founded with a straightforward idea: our night sky is a remarkable natural resource, and with the right policies and community will, we can protect it. Our 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status is pending with the IRS (June 2026).

Why Grand Junction?

Grand Junction sits at a remarkable intersection. We’re surrounded by public lands, national monuments, and state parks that rank among the darkest and most spectacular places in the American West. We have a community that values the outdoors and the natural environment. And we have an outdoor lighting code that, while strong, needs to be updated and packaged with the resources needed to match the growing momentum around dark sky policy across Colorado.

We think Grand Junction is ready for this conversation.
We’re here to help lead it.

Our mission

We educate the public about the causes and effects of light pollution. We advocate for responsible outdoor lighting policy at the local and regional level. We build relationships with city officials, businesses, conservation organizations, and state and national dark sky partners to advance meaningful, lasting change. And we work toward International Dark Sky Place certification for Grand Junction — a designation that recognizes communities committed to protecting the natural night environment.
